Gesang ist Dasein. — Rainer Maria Rilke | Printable Wall Art

“Gesang ist Dasein.”
“Song is existence.”

Words by Rainer Maria Rilke (1875-1926) — Austrian-German poet.

About this quote

Rilke suggests that true song, or poetic creation, is not merely an activity or an attempt to achieve something. Instead, it is a state of pure being. For Rilke, real art is not forced work, but a natural expression of presence and life itself. To sing is simply to exist fully in the world, attuned to the rhythm of creation.

This line appears in Rainer Maria Rilke’s sequence Sonnets to Orpheus, written in 1922. The poems explore themes of art, grief, and transformation, with Orpheus representing the ultimate figure of music and poetry.

People often hang this print in a music room, studio, or study to celebrate the deeply personal nature of creative expression.
