“Skinny frog, don't lose! Issa is right here”

Words by Kobayashi Issa (1763-1828) — Edo-period haiku poet known for humor and compassion toward small creatures.

About this quote

This gentle haiku offers warm encouragement to the underdog. Observing a small, weak frog struggling against a larger rival, the poet cheers it on while offering his own quiet presence as support. The verse captures empathy for the frail and vulnerable, reminding us that even when facing overwhelming odds, we are not alone and should keep striving.

Written by the Edo-period master Kobayashi Issa, this verse reflects his characteristic affection for small creatures. Issa recorded it in his 1816 diary after watching frogs competing in a pond near his home.

People often hang this print in a study or children's bedroom to provide gentle encouragement during daily challenges.
