Сжала руки под тёмной вуалью. — Anna Akhmatova | Printable Wall Art

“Сжала руки под тёмной вуалью.”
“She clenched her hands under a dark veil.”

Words by Anna Akhmatova (1889-1966) — Leading poet of the Russian Silver Age.

About this quote

This line captures the quiet agony of unspoken grief and heartbreak. The contrast between the hidden, physical gesture of distress, namely clenched hands, and the concealing veil reflects the struggle to maintain public dignity while experiencing intense private pain. It speaks to the universal human impulse to shield our deepest emotional wounds from the gaze of the outside world.

Written in 1911, this is the opening line of a famous early poem by Anna Akhmatova. It was published in her debut collection, Evening, in 1912, marking her as a central voice of Russian Acmeism and love poetry.

People often hang this in a quiet bedroom or reading space to reflect its dramatic and intimate character.
