“Наука — это способ удовлетворения личного любопытства за государственный счёт.”
“Science is a way of satisfying one's personal curiosity at the government's expense.”

Words by Lev Landau (1908-1968) — Nobel Prize-winning theoretical physicist.

About this quote

This witty observation frames scientific research as a delightful personal pursuit funded by public money. It gently mocks the grand claims of institutional science while capturing the real motivation of researchers: an insatiable desire to understand the world. Landau highlights the fortunate position of scientists who get paid to solve puzzles that fascinate them, bridging private passion and public patronage.

Lev Landau was a celebrated Soviet theoretical physicist who won the Nobel Prize in 1962. Known for his sharp wit, this remark circulated widely among twentieth-century Soviet academics as one of his famous informal maxims.

People often hang this in a university office or home study to bring lighthearted humour to serious intellectual work.
