“Himmelhoch jauchzend, zum Tode betrübt — glücklich allein ist die Seele, die liebt.”
“Rejoicing to the heavens, grieved unto death — happy alone is the soul that loves.”

Words by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832) — German poet, novelist, and statesman.

About this quote

This line captures the emotional swings of passionate love, moving rapidly between extreme joy and profound sorrow. Goethe suggests that despite the vulnerability and pain romantic devotion can bring, a life lived without love remains incomplete. True happiness lies not in emotional safety, but in the courage to open one’s heart completely to another, embracing every extreme.

The line comes from Goethe’s 1788 tragedy Egmont. It is sung by the character Klärchen as she contemplates her intense affection for the protagonist, embodying the dramatic spirit of German romantic literature.

People often hang this print beside a bed or in a reading room to contemplate deep human emotions.
