Re-examine all that you have been told... dismiss what insults your soul. — Walt Whitman | Printable Wall Art

“Re-examine all that you have been told... dismiss what insults your soul.”

Words by Walt Whitman (1819-1892) — American poet, essayist, and journalist.

About this quote

This passage urges individual critical thinking and spiritual autonomy. Rather than passively accepting inherited dogmas, societal rules, or conventional wisdom, Whitman encourages people to test every belief against their own moral compass and personal integrity. Anything that undermines one's dignity or feels fundamentally untrue should be rejected, allowing a person to live authentically according to their own conscience.

This quote comes from the preface to Walt Whitman's famous 1855 poetry collection, Leaves of Grass. Written during a period of American cultural transformation, it served as a manifesto for personal liberty and original thought.

People often hang this print in a study or library as a daily reminder to practise independent thought.
