Perpetual optimism is a force multiplier. — Colin Powell | Printable Wall Art

“Perpetual optimism is a force multiplier.”

Words by Colin Powell (1937-2021) — U.S. Secretary of State, four-star general.

About this quote

Maintaining a positive attitude actively increases what a team can achieve. In military terminology, a force multiplier is a factor that dramatically increases the effectiveness of a group. Powell applies this to leadership: unwavering optimism is not just a pleasant trait, but a practical tool that boosts morale, drives resilience, and enables people to accomplish far more than they could with a defeatist mindset.

Colin Powell published this phrase as one of his core rules of leadership in his 2012 memoir, It Worked for Me: In Life and Leadership. He relied on the maxim throughout his military and public career.

People often hang this print in a home office or study to maintain focus and resilience during demanding projects.
