Il n'y a peut-être pas de jours de notre enfance que nous… — Marcel Proust | Printable Wall Art

“Il n'y a peut-être pas de jours de notre enfance que nous ayons si pleinement vécus que ceux que nous avons cru laisser sans les vivre.”
“Perhaps there are no days of our childhood we lived so fully as those we thought we left without living them.”

Words by Marcel Proust (1871-1922) — French novelist, author of In Search of Lost Time.

About this quote

Proust suggests that the quiet, unremembered moments of childhood, often spent reading or lost in thought, are actually the most deeply experienced. Though we might feel those days passed without anything notable happening, the intense inner life and imagination we cultivated made them rich and meaningful. We lived them fully precisely because we were entirely absorbed.

This quote opens Proust's 1905 essay Sur la lecture, which served as the preface to his French translation of John Ruskin's Sesame and Lilies. It reflects his lifelong fascination with memory, reading, and the quiet passage of time.

People often hang this print in a reading nook or study to celebrate quiet moments of reflection and imagination.
