Über allen Gipfeln ist Ruh. — Johann Wolfgang von Goethe | Printable Wall Art

“Über allen Gipfeln ist Ruh.”
“Over all the peaks there is peace.”

Words by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832) — German poet, novelist, and statesman.

About this quote

This line captures a moment of deep stillness in the natural world. Looking across silent mountain tops, the speaker observes how nature settles as evening falls. It serves as a gentle meditation on calm, reminding us that after the noise and exertion of daily life, quietness and rest will eventually wrap around everything.

Goethe pencilled this short poem on the wooden wall of a hilltop hunting hut near Ilmenau, Germany, in September 1780. It was later published in 1815 under the title Wanderers Nachtlied.

People often place this print in a bedroom or quiet study to encourage evening rest and mindful reflection.
