歲寒，然後知松柏之後凋也 — Confucius | Printable Wall Art

“歲寒，然後知松柏之後凋也”
“Only when the year turns cold do we see that pine and cypress are last to wither.”

Words by Confucius (551 BC-479 BC) — Ancient Chinese philosopher, founder of Confucianism.

About this quote

Adversity reveals true strength of character. Just as evergreen trees remain green through the harsh winter while other foliage dies away, a person of integrity demonstrates steadfastness and moral courage during difficult times. Prosperity conceals weakness, but hardship distinguishes those who possess genuine resilience and moral principle from those whose virtue is merely fair-weather.

This observation appears in Book 9 of the Analects, a collection of sayings and ideas attributed to Confucius and compiled by his followers during the Warring States period in ancient China.

People often hang this print in a study or home office as a reminder of patience and steady resolve.
