On ne naît pas femme : on le devient. — Simone de Beauvoir | Printable Wall Art

“On ne naît pas femme : on le devient.”
“One is not born, but rather becomes, a woman.”

Words by Simone de Beauvoir (1908-1986) — French existentialist philosopher, writer, and feminist theorist.

About this quote

This statement argues that gender roles are shaped by social conditioning rather than biological destiny. Simone de Beauvoir suggests that society constructs femininity through expectations, upbringing, and cultural norms. A person assigned female at birth learns how to exist as a woman through ongoing social pressure, meaning that womanhood is a learned experience rather than an innate biological state.

This line opens the second volume of Simone de Beauvoir's 1949 philosophical treatise, The Second Sex. It became a foundational statement for modern feminist theory and existentialist thought in post-war France.

People often hang this print in a study or bedroom as a thoughtful reminder of personal growth and identity.
