見賢思齊焉，見不賢而內自省也 — Confucius | Printable Wall Art

“見賢思齊焉，見不賢而內自省也”
“On seeing a person of virtue, think of equaling them; on seeing one without, examine yourself.”

Words by Confucius (551 BC-479 BC) — Ancient Chinese philosopher, founder of Confucianism.

About this quote

This saying encourages continuous self-improvement through mindful observation of others. When you encounter someone of high moral character, aim to match their virtues. When you notice someone acting unwisely or unkindly, look inward to ensure you do not share those same flaws. It presents every human interaction as an opportunity to cultivate humility, wisdom, and better personal habits.

The line is recorded in Book 4 of the Analects, a compilation of sayings and ideas attributed to the ancient Chinese philosopher Confucius, compiled by his followers after his death.

People often display this in a home study or classroom to encourage quiet reflection and continuous self-growth.
