About this quote

This line expresses a compassionate wish to shelter everyone suffering from poverty and hardship. After losing his own roof to a storm, the poet looks beyond his personal misery and imagines a grand, universal refuge. It reflects an enduring ideal of selfless empathy, prioritising the well-being and dignity of others above one's own comfort.

Written by Tang dynasty poet Du Fu in 761, after an autumn storm destroyed the thatched roof of his cottage in Chengdu. The verse comes from his poem Song of the Autumn Wind and the Tattered Thatched Cottage.
