“Notice that the stiffest tree is most easily cracked, while the bamboo survives by bending with the wind.”

Words by Bruce Lee (1940-1973) — Martial artist, actor, and philosopher.

About this quote

This quote uses a simple image from nature to highlight the power of adaptability and resilience. Rigid strength often breaks under intense pressure, whereas flexibility allows one to yield to challenges without being destroyed. True endurance comes from knowing when to adapt, rather than stubbornly resisting every force that comes your way.

Bruce Lee articulated this Taoist-inspired idea in interviews and notes during the late 1960s and early 1970s, reflecting his martial arts philosophy, Jeet Kune Do, which emphasised fluidity over rigid form.

People often hang this in a home office or study to remind themselves to stay flexible during stressful projects.
