Not being able to govern events, I govern myself. — Michel de Montaigne | Printable Wall Art

“Not being able to govern events, I govern myself.”

Words by Michel de Montaigne (1533-1592) — French Renaissance philosopher and essayist.

About this quote

This quotation reflects the classical Stoic principle that we cannot control external circumstances, only our response to them. Montaigne acknowledges human helplessness in the face of fortune and chaotic world events. Rather than wasting energy trying to master external outcomes, true wisdom lies in cultivating internal discipline, self-awareness, and personal composure amidst uncertainty.

Written by French Renaissance philosopher Michel de Montaigne, this line appears in his seminal 1580 collection Essays. Montaigne frequently explored themes of Stoicism, self-examination, and the limits of human knowledge during a time of civil instability in France.

People often hang this print in a home office or study to encourage composure and focus during difficult days.
