Nil Desperandum — Horace | Printable Wall Art

“Nil Desperandum”
“Never despair”

Words by Horace (65-8 BC) — Roman lyric poet.

About this quote

This stoic Latin phrase translates directly as "nothing to be despaired of", meaning one should never lose hope regardless of how difficult circumstances become. It serves as a reminder that hardship is temporary and that maintaining courage in times of adversity is essential. The core idea is to remain steadfast, resilient, and optimistic when facing life's inevitable challenges.

The phrase originates from the Roman poet Horace in his Odes, written during the first century BC. In the poem, the leader Teucer encourages his companions to trust in fate and persevere as they set sail into the unknown.

People often hang this print in a home office or study as a quiet reminder to persevere through challenging work.
