My wife and I were happy for twenty years. Then we met. — Rodney Dangerfield | Printable Wall Art

“My wife and I were happy for twenty years. Then we met.”

Words by Rodney Dangerfield (1921-2004) — American comedian known for 'I don't get no respect'.

About this quote

This line relies on a subverted expectation to deliver its punchline. The setup suggests a long and harmonious marriage, but the sudden twist reveals that the happiness occurred before the couple ever set eyes on each other. It plays on the classic comedy trope of marital frustration, using brevity and surprise to create a sharp, self-deprecating joke about relationships.

American comedian Rodney Dangerfield popularised this joke during his stand-up routines in the late twentieth century. It became one of his signature one-liners, reflecting a stage persona built entirely around self-deprecation and receiving no respect.

People often hang this print in a hallway or study to give guests a quick, lighthearted laugh.
