About this quote

This quotation reflects the belief that creative work is a direct extension of the artist's soul. For John Coltrane, playing music was not merely about technical skill or entertainment, but an act of spiritual devotion and self-expression. He viewed his sound as a vessel for his inner life, transforming his personal faith, intellect, and lived experience into art that connects deeply with others.

John Coltrane expressed these sentiments during the 1960s, a period marked by his profound spiritual awakening. It features in interviews and sleeve notes from this era, most notably reflecting the philosophy behind landmark albums such as A Love Supreme.

People often hang this in a music room or creative studio for daily inspiration while practising their craft.
