My humanity is bound up in yours, for we can only be… — Desmond Tutu | Printable Wall Art

“My humanity is bound up in yours, for we can only be human together.”

Words by Desmond Tutu (1931-2021) — South African archbishop and anti-apartheid leader.

About this quote

This quotation expresses the traditional African philosophy of Ubuntu, which holds that a person is a person through other people. It suggests that human existence is inherently relational rather than isolated. We cannot flourish, find dignity, or fully realise our own potential in isolation. Our wellbeing, moral character, and identity are deeply connected to how we treat and live alongside those around us.

Desmond Tutu used this phrase frequently during and after the struggle against apartheid in South Africa to explain the concept of Ubuntu. It appears across his speeches and his 1999 book, No Future Without Forgiveness.

People often hang this print in living rooms or communal hallways to remind family and visitors of shared connection.
