Man is nothing else but what he makes of himself. — Jean-Paul Sartre | Printable Wall Art

“Man is nothing else but what he makes of himself.”

Words by Jean-Paul Sartre (1905-1980) — French existentialist philosopher and writer.

About this quote

This statement is a cornerstone of existentialist philosophy. Sartre argues that human beings have no pre-determined nature or divine purpose. We are not defined by ancestry, circumstance, or fate. Instead, we exist first, and then shape our identity entirely through our choices, actions, and values. With this absolute freedom comes total personal responsibility for who we become and how we live our lives.

The line originates from Sartre's 1946 lecture and essay, Existentialism is a Humanism. Delivered in post-war Paris, the talk defended existentialist thought against popular criticisms, emphasising human agency and personal responsibility.

People often hang this quote in a home study or workspace as a daily reminder of self-determination.
