Der Mensch ist zwar unheilig genug, aber die Menschheit in seiner Person… — Immanuel Kant | Printable Wall Art

“Der Mensch ist zwar unheilig genug, aber die Menschheit in seiner Person muss ihm heilig sein.”
“Man is indeed unholy enough, but humanity in his own person must be sacred to him.”

Words by Immanuel Kant (1724-1804) — German philosopher.

About this quote

Kant distinguishes between individual human flaws and the inherent dignity of human nature. While individuals often fall short morally, the rational capacity for goodness within every person possesses intrinsic value. Therefore, every individual has a fundamental duty to treat both themselves and others with deep respect, recognizing human dignity as something sacred that must never be violated.

This passage appears in Kant's major work on moral theory, the Critique of Practical Reason, published in 1788. It reflects the Enlightenment philosopher's core belief in universal human dignity and moral duty.
