L'homme est né libre, et partout il est dans les fers. — Jean-Jacques Rousseau | Printable Wall Art

“L'homme est né libre, et partout il est dans les fers.”
“Man is born free, and everywhere he is in chains.”

Words by Jean-Jacques Rousseau (1712-1778) — Genevan-French philosopher and writer of the Enlightenment.

About this quote

Rousseau argues that human beings possess natural freedom from birth, yet modern political and social structures restrict that liberty. The chains represent legal, economic, and social obligations imposed by civil society. He suggests that while society is necessary, existing institutions often corrupt human freedom rather than protect it, prompting a need for a fair social contract based on the collective will.

This opening line comes from Rousseau’s 1762 political treatise, The Social Contract. The work explored how citizens could live in political communities while preserving their individual liberties, deeply influencing the French Revolution and modern democratic thought.

People often display this quote in a study or home office to inspire quiet reflection on personal liberty.
