Man is born free, and everywhere he is in chains. — Jean-Jacques Rousseau | Printable Wall Art

“Man is born free, and everywhere he is in chains.”

Words by Jean-Jacques Rousseau (1712-1778) — Genevan philosopher and writer.

About this quote

Rousseau argues that human beings possess a natural right to liberty, yet political systems and social institutions consistently restrict that freedom. While living in a community requires rules, modern governments often enforce authority rather than protect individual rights. The opening line challenges readers to reconsider how society is structured and to seek a legitimate, fair social contract that preserves human dignity.

This famous opening line comes from Jean-Jacques Rousseau's political treatise, The Social Contract, published in 1762. The work became a fundamental text during the European Enlightenment, deeply influencing modern political philosophy and revolutionary movements.

This print suits a study, home library, or classroom, where its bold message encourages daily reflection on freedom.
