Love is a kind of warfare. — Ovid | Printable Wall Art

“Love is a kind of warfare.”

Words by Ovid (43 BC - 17 AD) — Roman poet, author of Ars Amatoria.

About this quote

This line compares romantic devotion to military service. Ovid suggests that pursuing and maintaining love demands active strategy, emotional resilience, and quiet endurance, much like a soldier on a campaign. Rather than portraying affection as a passive or purely gentle state, the quote frames romance as an intense, challenging endeavour requiring courage, patience, and tactical skill from those who participate.

Written by the Roman poet Ovid in the late first century BC, this concept appears in his love poetry, notably Amores. Ovid draws playful parallels between the hardships of a campaigning soldier and the devotion of a persistent lover.

People often hang this print in a bedroom or personal study as a witty observation on modern romance.
