“Love does not consist in gazing at each other, but in looking outward together in the same direction.”

Words by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry (1900-1944) — French writer and aviator, author of The Little Prince.

About this quote

True love is not merely romantic fascination or gazing admiringly at a partner. Instead, it flourishes when two people share a common purpose, values, and vision for the future. By facing the world side by side rather than focusing solely on one another, a couple builds a durable partnership grounded in mutual goals and shared action.

This line comes from Saint-Exupéry's 1939 memoir, Terre des hommes, published in English as Wind, Sand and Stars. Writing as both a pilot and philosopher, he reflected on human comradeship, duty, and the deeper meaning of love.

People often hang this print in a shared bedroom or living room to celebrate enduring partnership and joint life goals.
