Love consists in this, that two solitudes protect and touch and greet… — Rainer Maria Rilke | Printable Wall Art

“Love consists in this, that two solitudes protect and touch and greet each other.”

Words by Rainer Maria Rilke (1875-1926) — Austrian poet, author of Letters to a Young Poet.

About this quote

Rilke suggests that true love does not mean merging two people into one or losing your individual identity. Instead, mature affection requires each partner to respect and guard the other person's inner life. A lasting relationship thrives when two independent individuals acknowledge, protect, and gently connect with each other while maintaining their own distinct, quiet sense of self.

This passage appears in Rainer Maria Rilke's Letters to a Young Poet, a collection of correspondence written between 1903 and 1908. It reflects his deeply personal views on intimate relationships and individual identity.

This quote suits a bedroom or quiet reading corner, offering a thoughtful perspective on partnership and personal space.
