“Love consists in this: that two solitudes protect, border, and greet one another.”

Words by Rainer Maria Rilke (1875-1926) — Austrian-German poet.

About this quote

Rilke redefines love not as two people merging into one, but as a deep respect for each other’s individuality. True love does not swallow up a partner's quiet inner life or demand total union. Instead, it creates a space where two independent souls safeguard, touch upon, and welcome one another while remaining distinct, whole beings.

This passage comes from Rilke's Letters to a Young Poet, a collection of correspondence written between 1902 and 1908. It was published posthumously in 1929 and remains one of his most celebrated prose reflections on intimacy and solitude.

People often hang this print in a shared bedroom or quiet study to celebrate modern, respectful partnership.
