About this quote

This phrase encourages maintaining the fresh resolve, humility, and passion of a beginner throughout life. It suggests treating every new day, effort, or relationship as a start untainted by past fatigue or complacency. By holding onto the purity of one's initial commitment, one can navigate ongoing difficulties with quiet endurance and hope.

Written by South Korean scholar and calligrapher Shin Young-bok, this motif featured prominently in his essays and distinctive brushwork. It reflects his philosophical musings on renewal following twenty years of political imprisonment.

People often hang this in a home office or hallway to inspire a calm perspective every morning.
