Lügen haben kurze Beine — German Proverb | Printable Wall Art

“Lügen haben kurze Beine”
“Lies have short legs.”

A traditional German saying, set as gallery-quality typographic wall art.

About this quote

This classic saying means that dishonesty will not get you very far. Just as someone with short legs cannot run fast or travel great distances, a lie is easily overtaken by the truth. Deceit might offer a temporary escape, but it lacks the endurance to survive scrutiny, making honesty the far wiser long-term choice.

This traditional folk proverb has been recorded in German literature since at least the sixteenth century. Similar expressions exist across many European languages, though this specific phrasing remains one of the most familiar moral adages in the German-speaking world.

People often hang this print in a hallway or children's bedroom to encourage honesty in everyday family life.
