Écrasons l'infâme. — Voltaire | Printable Wall Art

“Écrasons l'infâme.”
“Let us crush the infamous thing.”

Words by Voltaire (1694-1778) — French Enlightenment writer, philosopher, and satirist.

About this quote

Voltaire used this slogan to rally against religious intolerance, fanaticism, and abuses of power. The infamous thing refers to corrupt dogmas and institutions that suppressed free thought and justice. It is a powerful call to use reason, moral courage, and critical thinking to confront systemic cruelty, superstition, and authority that harms human freedom and dignity.

Voltaire repeatedly used this phrase as a motto in his personal correspondence during the 1760s, often abbreviating it. It became a central rallying cry of the French Enlightenment against institutional oppression and religious bigotry.

People often hang this print in a study or home office to inspire quiet moral courage and intellectual integrity.
