Edel sei der Mensch, hilfreich und gut! — Johann Wolfgang von Goethe | Printable Wall Art

“Edel sei der Mensch, hilfreich und gut!”
“Let man be noble, helpful and good!”

Words by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832) — German poet, novelist, and statesman.

About this quote

This line sets out a vision of human morality. Unlike nature, which treats everyone without bias or mercy, human beings have the unique capacity to choose kindness, fairness, and reason. Goethe suggests that through active compassion and moral choices, people can elevate themselves and bring a sense of divine grace into an unfeeling world.

It is the opening line of Goethe's 1783 poem Das Göttliche (The Divine), written during his time in Weimar. The poem explores what sets humanity apart from the unfeeling forces of the natural world.

People often hang this in a study or hallway to serve as a daily reminder of character and quiet integrity.
