Leadership is the art of getting someone else to do something you… — Dwight D. Eisenhower | Printable Wall Art

“Leadership is the art of getting someone else to do something you want done because he wants to do it.”

Words by Dwight D. Eisenhower (1890-1969) — 34th President of the United States, Supreme Allied Commander in WWII.

About this quote

This definition shifts the focus of authority from force to persuasion. True influence relies on aligning personal desires with shared goals, rather than commanding obedience. When individuals internalise an objective, they act with genuine commitment. The line highlights that effective management is an art of motivation, convincing others that the desired task is in their own interest to complete.

Dwight D. Eisenhower delivered versions of this statement during his presidency in the 1950s, including an address at an executive leadership conference in 1954. It reflected his military experience and political philosophy on consensus building.

People often hang this print in a home office or study to encourage thoughtful management and persuasive direction.
