知人者智，自知者明 — Laozi | Printable Wall Art

“知人者智，自知者明”
“Knowing others is wisdom; knowing oneself is enlightenment.”

Words by Laozi (6th century BC) — Founder of Taoism, traditional author of the Tao Te Ching.

About this quote

Understanding the people around you requires intelligence, but true wisdom comes from within. The line suggests that observing others is an external skill, whereas self-awareness demands deeper honesty and quiet reflection. Mastering your own mind, desires, and flaws brings genuine clarity and peace, which is far harder to achieve than simply analysing the motives of others.

This line comes from Chapter 33 of the Tao Te Ching, a foundational text of Taoism traditionally attributed to the ancient philosopher Laozi in sixth-century BC China. It reflects core Taoist ideas about self-cultivation and spiritual harmony.

People often hang this print in a study or home office to encourage daily self-reflection and quiet focus.
