It took me four years to paint like Raphael, but a lifetime… — Pablo Picasso | Printable Wall Art

“It took me four years to paint like Raphael, but a lifetime to paint like a child.”

Words by Pablo Picasso (1881-1973) — Painter and sculptor, co-founder of Cubism.

About this quote

Mastering classical technique requires discipline, but shedding adult rigidities to regain a child's raw, uninhibited creativity is a far harder struggle. Picasso suggests that true artistic genius lies not in complex skill, but in unlearning formal rules to see the world with fresh, instinctual wonder. Pure imagination must be cultivated over a lifetime.

Picasso reportedly made this remark in 1946 while visiting an exhibition of children's art in Brighton. It reflects his lifelong fascination with the untamed creativity of youth, which heavily influenced his late artistic style.

Creative studios and art classrooms suit this print well, as it encourages artists to embrace spontaneous thinking.
