About this quote

Maturation is not simply a matter of passing years, but a deliberate choice that requires bravery. Society often pressures individuals to conform to standard expectations. To discover and accept your genuine identity, despite external demands, requires quiet strength. This line reminds us that becoming your true self is an act of courage, not an automatic milestone.

Written by American poet E. E. Cummings, this line appeared in a brief 1955 essay titled A Poet's Advice to Students. It reflects his lifelong belief in individual liberty and personal honesty over social conformity.

People often hang this quote in a bedroom or home office as a daily reminder to stay authentic.
