Words by Ella Fitzgerald (1917-1996) — American jazz vocalist known as the First Lady of Song.

About this quote

This line emphasises that your background and past struggles do not define your future possibilities. It is an encouraging reminder to focus on your goals, potential, and direction in life rather than where you started. What matters most is the determination to move forward, grow, and shape your own path regardless of humble or difficult origins.

Ella Fitzgerald overcame a difficult childhood in New York to become an international music icon. She frequently expressed this pragmatic, forward-looking philosophy in interviews, reflecting her own extraordinary journey from poverty to worldwide acclaim.

People often hang this in a hallway or study as a daily reminder to stay focused on future goals.
