It is not that we have a short time to live, but… — Seneca | Printable Wall Art

“It is not that we have a short time to live, but that we waste a lot of it.”

Words by Seneca (c. 4 BC-65 AD) — Roman Stoic philosopher and statesman.

About this quote

Seneca argues that human life is long enough if we use it wisely. We often complain about time running out, but the true problem is how carelessly we spend our days on trivial distractions, pointless anxieties, and tasks that do not matter. By taking control of our time and living intentionally, a single lifetime becomes more than sufficient.

This line opens Seneca's essay De Brevitate Vitae (On the Shortness of Life), written around 49 AD to his friend Paulinus. It reflects core Stoic thinking on time, mortality, and personal responsibility.

People often hang this print in a home office or study as a daily reminder to focus on meaningful priorities.
