“It is not good when humankind strains reason too far, trying to order with logic things that logic cannot yet grasp.”

Words by Hermann Hesse (1877-1962) — German-Swiss novelist and poet.

About this quote

This line warns against relying solely on intellect to understand every aspect of life. Hesse suggests that certain truths, emotions, and human experiences lie beyond strict logic. When we try to force rational frameworks onto mysteries we cannot yet comprehend, we risk oversimplifying them or causing unnecessary confusion. True wisdom involves accepting the limits of reason while remaining open to mystery and intuition.

Written by the German-Swiss novelist and Nobel laureate Hermann Hesse. It reflects his enduring interest in spirituality and psychology, particularly the balance between rational thought and deeper intuitive truth found across his mid-twentieth-century essays and novels.

People often hang this quote in a quiet study or home library to encourage patience and thoughtful reflection.
