It is not a lack of love, but a lack of friendship… — Friedrich Nietzsche | Printable Wall Art

“It is not a lack of love, but a lack of friendship that makes unhappy marriages.”

Words by Friedrich Nietzsche (1844-1900) — German philosopher.

About this quote

Romantic passion often fades or shifts over time, making it an unreliable foundation for a lifelong partnership. Nietzsche suggests that lasting marital happiness relies instead on mutual respect, shared intellectual companionship, and deep friendship. When a marriage fails, it is usually because the couple lacked the enduring bond of being good friends, rather than a total absence of romantic feeling.

This aphorism appears in Friedrich Nietzsche’s 1878 work, Human, All Too Human. Written during his middle period, the book consists of short philosophical observations on human nature, culture, and personal relationships.

People often hang this print in a shared bedroom or living area as a thoughtful daily reflection on partnership.
