“И скучно и грустно, и некому руку подать”
“It is dull and sad, and there is no one to take by the hand”

Words by Mikhail Lermontov (1814-1841) — Russian poet and novelist, author of A Hero of Our Time.

About this quote

This line captures a deep sense of emotional isolation and weariness. It speaks to moments when life feels empty and melancholic, and one feels completely alone without a trusted friend to offer comfort or companionship. Lermontov reflects on the futility of human desires, passion, and time, expressing a quiet resignation to spiritual solitude that resonates with anyone experiencing profound loneliness.

Written in 1840, this line forms the opening of one of Lermontov's most famous lyric poems, published shortly before his death in a duel in 1841. It epitomises 19th-century Russian Romantic melancholia.

People often hang this print in a quiet study or personal library for solitary reading and quiet reflection.
