It is better to lead from behind and to put others in… — Nelson Mandela | Printable Wall Art

“It is better to lead from behind and to put others in front, especially when you celebrate victory.”

Words by Nelson Mandela (1918-2013) — South African President and anti-apartheid leader.

About this quote

Effective leaders do not always need to be at the front of the stage. By encouraging others to take credit during moments of success, a leader builds trust, confidence, and unity within a group. True authority comes from empowering those around you to succeed, stepping forward only when danger or hardship requires clear direction and personal responsibility.

This line appears in Nelson Mandela's 1994 autobiography, Long Walk to Freedom. He learned this philosophy during his youth in the Eastern Cape, comparing leadership to a shepherd guiding a flock from behind.

People often hang this print in a home office or study to encourage servant leadership and collaborative teamwork.
