Il vaut mieux être marié qu'être mort. — Molière | Printable Wall Art

“Il vaut mieux être marié qu'être mort.”
“It is better to be married than dead.”

Words by Molière (1622-1673) — French playwright and actor, master of classical comedy.

About this quote

This witty line delivers a wry, pragmatic view of matrimony by comparing it to the ultimate alternative. Rather than romanticising marriage as a divine union, it frames wedlock as a manageable burden or a practical compromise. The humour lies in the absurdly low bar it sets for marital happiness, acknowledging the everyday trials of shared life while dryly pointing out that being alive remains preferable.

Written by the French playwright Molière in the seventeenth century, this quote features in his comedy Sganarelle, or The Imaginary Cuckold. It reflects his signature style of satire, mocking societal expectations and romantic ideals.

People often display this quote in a bedroom or hallway to add a touch of lighthearted humour to family life.
