Inspiration is for amateurs—the rest of us just show up and get… — Chuck Close | Printable Wall Art

“Inspiration is for amateurs—the rest of us just show up and get to work.”

Words by Chuck Close (1940-2021) — Photorealist painter known for large-scale portraits.

About this quote

This quotation dismisses the romantic notion that artists must wait for sudden flashes of creative insight. Instead, Chuck Close argues that real work happens through daily discipline, routine, and persistence. By showing up consistently, ideas naturally emerge from the process of making things. Creativity is not a magical gift, but the practical result of steady effort and professional habit.

American painter Chuck Close expressed this view during an interview for Joe Fig's 2003 book, Inside the Artist's Studio. It reflects his lifelong belief in rigorous technique and structured labour over romantic artistic myth.

People often hang this print in a home office or creative studio as a reminder to start working daily.
