In seinem Freunde soll man seinen besten Feind haben. — Friedrich Nietzsche | Printable Wall Art

“In seinem Freunde soll man seinen besten Feind haben.”
“In one's friend, one should have one's best enemy.”

Words by Friedrich Nietzsche (1844-1900) — German philosopher.

About this quote

Nietzsche suggests that genuine friendship requires more than mere comfort and agreement. A true friend challenges your ideas, tests your character, and pushes you towards self-improvement. By acting as a constructive adversary, a good friend forces you to overcome your weaknesses, offering the kind of honest opposition that helps you grow into a stronger person.

This line appears in Friedrich Nietzsche's 1883 philosophical novel Thus Spoke Zarathustra. In the section titled On the Friend, Zarathustra discusses how true companionship demands honesty, respect, and the willingness to challenge those we love.

People often hang this in a study or home office to encourage rigorous thinking and honest self-reflection.
