“En un lugar de la Mancha, de cuyo nombre no quiero acordarme.”

Words by Miguel de Cervantes (1547-1616) — Novelist, author of Don Quixote.

About this quote

This famous opening sentence sets a tone of deliberate mystery and storytelling independence. By choosing not to specify the exact village, the narrator invites readers to focus on the universal human spirit rather than strict geography. It establishes the narrator's playful control over the tale, suggesting that great stories belong to everyone and can begin anywhere, regardless of precise location.

This is the celebrated opening line of Cervantes's masterpiece, Don Quixote, published in 1605. It marks the beginning of the modern novel, introducing the aging knight-errant whose imaginative adventures redefine Spanish literature.

People often hang this print in a study or library to celebrate classic literature and the art of storytelling.
