一蓑煙雨任平生 — Su Shi | Printable Wall Art

“一蓑煙雨任平生”
“In a straw raincoat, I walk through mist and rain, at ease with whatever life brings.”

Words by Su Shi (1037-1101) — Song dynasty polymath poet, essayist, and calligrapher (also known as Su Dongpo).

About this quote

This line speaks of inner resilience and peace of mind when facing life's hardships. Su Shi uses the image of walking through a sudden downpour in a simple straw raincoat to show that external troubles need not disturb one's spirit. It is a reminder to embrace life's unexpected storms with calm acceptance, quiet fortitude, and enduring grace.

Written by Song dynasty poet Su Shi in 1082, this line comes from his ci poem *Ding Feng Bo* (Calming the Waves). Composed during his political exile in Huangzhou, it records his calm response to being caught in a sudden rainstorm.

People often hang this in a study or hallway as a comforting reminder to remain calm during turbulent times.
