If your pictures aren't good enough, you're not close enough. — Robert Capa | Printable Wall Art

“If your pictures aren't good enough, you're not close enough.”

Words by Robert Capa (1913-1954) — War photographer and co-founder of Magnum Photos.

About this quote

This famous maxim suggests that powerful work requires true intimacy and involvement. In photography, physical proximity creates immediacy, but the principle applies broadly to creative life. Great work comes from stepping closer to your subject rather than observing from a safe, detached distance. If a project feels flat or distant, you need to engage more deeply, take greater personal risks, and immerse yourself fully in the experience.

The phrase is attributed to Hungarian-American photojournalist Robert Capa, renowned for his perilous front-line war photography in the mid-twentieth century. It became his personal motto and a founding ethos for documentary photojournalists worldwide.

Creative professionals often hang this quote in photography studios or home offices to prompt bold, courageous work.
