If you want to fly, you have to give up the things… — Toni Morrison | Printable Wall Art

“If you want to fly, you have to give up the things that weigh you down.”

Words by Toni Morrison (1931-2019) — Novelist and Nobel laureate, author of Beloved.

About this quote

This quote offers a gentle metaphor for personal growth and freedom. To achieve your highest ambitions or find emotional peace, you must consciously release past hurts, self-doubt, and lingering obligations. Carrying heavy emotional baggage keeps you grounded in old patterns. True progress requires the courage to unburden yourself from whatever holds you back, allowing you to move forward freely.

This line is associated with Toni Morrison's 1977 novel, Song of Solomon. The book centres on themes of flight, personal identity, and the necessity of shedding historical and emotional burdens to achieve spiritual freedom.

People often hang this print in a study or bedroom as a quiet reminder to let go of burdens.
