If you want to be a writer, you must do two things… — Stephen King | Printable Wall Art

“If you want to be a writer, you must do two things above all others: read a lot and write a lot.”

Words by Stephen King (1947-) — Author of horror and suspense novels including The Shining.

About this quote

This line offers straightforward advice for anyone aspiring to master the craft of story creation. King strips away the romantic mystery of writing, emphasising that skill comes from consistent practice rather than innate talent alone. Reading teaches you structure, rhythm, and vocabulary, while writing daily builds discipline, sharpens your technique, and helps you discover your own unique creative voice.

This statement appears in Stephen King's 2000 book, On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft. Part memoir and part practical advice, the text outlines his belief in simple, disciplined habits for mastering creative work.

People often hang this print in a home office or study to encourage daily creative focus and discipline.
