If you hear a voice within you say 'you cannot paint,' then… — Vincent van Gogh | Printable Wall Art

“If you hear a voice within you say 'you cannot paint,' then by all means paint, and that voice will be silenced.”

Words by Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890) — Post-Impressionist painter, created Starry Night and Sunflowers.

About this quote

This quote addresses the experience of self-doubt that often halts creative work. It suggests that the most effective way to overcome an inner critic is through action rather than debate. By painting anyway, you prove your internal fears wrong and gain confidence through practice. Doing the work itself is what ultimately silences insecurity and allows artistic growth to happen.

Vincent van Gogh wrote these words in a letter to his brother Theo in October 1884. At the time, he was living in Nuenen, working hard to master his technique despite frequent periods of self-doubt.

This print suits a studio or home office, offering daily encouragement to overcome doubt and begin creating.
